PARK PERFORMANCES

Saturday 31st July, 12pm & 3pm, Bowling Park
Sunday 1st August, 12pm & 3pm, Lister Park

The park performances are part of Bradford Fringe’s free outdoor arts festival, celebrating dance, theatre, music, comedy and poetry. Come and join in fun activities for all the family!

A travelling dance show with a difference will animate the streets of Bradford this summer. Created by Bradford-based producers Spin Arts, ‘Horse & Cart’ will tour residential neighbourhoods across Bradford at the end of July, on the back of a real horse and cart!

‘Horse & Cart’ explores the commonalities between Traveller communities and rag and bone men, collecting scrap metal. Through Indian Kathak and Irish dance, music and storytelling, it shines a light on these diverse communities often faced with racism, prejudice and discrimination.

The cart will parade around areas of Bradford including Apperley Bridge, Barkerend, Bolton Outlanes, Bowling, Greengates, Five Lane Ends and Laisterdyke, creating a carnival atmosphere with singing, dancing, storytelling, games and activities. People can watch the parade for free from their own front doors, gardens or streets before it travels to Bowling Park on Saturday 31st July and Lister Park Sunday 1st August, for longer performances as part of Bradford Fringe Festival Art In’t Park.

The full-length performances will feature fast-paced footwork and folk songs from multi award-winning dancers and choreographers Keira Martin and Sonia Sabri. They’ll tell spellbinding stories of traditions, myths and legends from times gone by, exploring themes of culture, migration, diversity, working class and industrial heritage.

The performance tells a story by award-winning Romany Gypsy author Richard O’Neill, with words by Seeta Patel, as well as original music composed by Archita Kumar and Amy-Rose Atkinson.

The cart used in the production, as well as Rambo the horse, has been kindly loaned by Holme Wood based horse fanatic Robert Myers-Priestley, who will accompany the dancers.

“Horse & Cart pays homage to age-old traditions, lifestyles and cultures of travelling communities and scrap metal collectors. We want to celebrate an important and often overlooked part of Bradford’s history, shining a light on those who make a conscious decision to live outside of the accepted norm. We hope something a bit different will help continue the wonderful community spirit we’ve seen in the last year”. Spin Arts
